When opening weekend numbers are low, a studio experiences a certain kind of silence. Something slower and more costly than the piercing sting of a negative review. After “Supergirl” opened to $37.1 million domestically in late June 2026—a figure that falls somewhere between painful and alarming for a movie that cost $170 million to produce and another $120 million to market—Warner Bros. found itself breathing that atmosphere.

In that particular Hollywood way, the math is brutal. To break even, the studio required between $300 and $375 million worldwide. It is currently anticipated that “Supergirl” will reach a global peak of between $200 and $210 million. Depending on who you ask inside the building, the resulting loss ranges from $80 million to $120 million. One of the biggest financial blunders in recent studio history is represented by either figure.

The timing is what makes this sting especially acute. James Gunn’s “Superman” opened to $125 million just one summer prior and eventually surpassed $618 million worldwide. In public celebrations, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav used terms like “bold 10-year plan” and “the momentum is real.” As reasonable as it seemed at the time, confidence might have contributed to a certain blind spot regarding what “Supergirl” was really asking viewers to accept.

Because, despite marketing’s obvious failure, the budget and marketing itself are not the main issues here. It has a more elemental quality. Supergirl is just not Superman. In the words of Exhibitor Relations analyst Jeff Bock, “Supergirl isn’t a character that has ever created an event-level blockbuster.” Milly Alcock, who reportedly brought genuine conviction to her role despite receiving a comparatively meager $400,000 for her film debut, is not being disparaged. The studio either underestimated or decided to bet against this structural problem.

Here, a more general pattern is worth observing. Superhero films followed a sort of unwritten rule for about 20 years: regardless of the name on the poster, audiences showed up. In 2018, Sony demonstrated this by making $856 million worldwide with “Venom,” a movie that got truly awful reviews. It appears that time has passed. The cost of tickets has only increased, and moviegoers are becoming pickier and more thoughtful about where they spend their money. For a few years now, the genre’s armor has been deteriorating, and “Supergirl” encountered that change at the perfect time.

The film’s economics are noteworthy because Warner Bros. made an effort to control the negative aspects. No first-dollar gross agreements, such as those that inflated the losses on 2024’s “Joker: Folie à Deux,” are in place for the cast. Theoretically, that ought to have reduced the breakeven point. In reality, the box office results fall so far short of expectations that the structural savings hardly make a difference.

As all of this is happening, there’s a sense that the budget figure itself wasn’t the true error. The idea was that the momentum from one popular movie, “Superman,” could be applied to a lesser-known character without the same cultural weight drawing viewers in. Readers have always needed to think the universe is worth going back to for sequels and franchise extensions. “Supergirl” challenged viewers to travel sideways into space with a character that the majority of people have never had strong feelings for. Measured in empty seats, the response was illuminating.

Peter Safran, co-head of DC Studios, has stated in public that “Supergirl” is “just one component of a broader, long-term strategy.” That might be accurate. However, $200 million lessons tend to sharpen everyone’s perspective on what should be prioritized next.
