An actor stops receiving calls for a brief period of time that is frequently undetectable to outsiders. The story stuck because a name was attached to it, not because the parts dried up or they aged out. That could be the end of the world in Hollywood. Not just the notoriety. the cash as well.

Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni’s case has brought this machinery to light. Their two-year legal battle over the movie It Ends With Us, which included accusations of creative overreach, harassment, and a planned smear campaign, did more than just make headlines. It had repercussions. According to leaked emails, Sony executives called Lively “epic-level stupid” and said she “probably will never work again, or not for a while.” The fact that a studio executive made the prediction at all indicates how quickly financial standing in this industry can vanish, regardless of whether it turns out to be true.

In Hollywood, reputation works much like a credit score. It is imperceptible until it is harmed, at which point all transactions become dependent upon it. It is not necessary for a coordinated or organic smear campaign to be proven true in order to be harmful. It just needs to be believed long enough for partnerships to discreetly end, deals to fall through, and brand sponsors to call someone else. Almost immediately, Lively’s haircare brand, her public appearances, and her husband Ryan Reynolds’s endeavors all became intertwined with public opinion. Even if the legal dispute is resolved, the financial fallout usually persists.

This is an important place to remember Brendan Fraser’s story. He used to be one of Hollywood’s most lucrative stars; audiences genuinely adored him in George of the Jungle and The Mummy. Then, his career quietly vanished after he revealed that a former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had groped him. No big announcement. No public denunciation. There were just fewer calls, fewer parts, and years of financial hardship that followed a different kind of smear: the suggestion that he was unreliable, challenging, or unworthy of the trouble. For the industry to quietly acknowledge that it had erred, it took almost twenty years and an Oscar.

The way the financial ruin compounds is what makes it so brutal. It hurts to lose even one significant project. However, losing the project also means losing the press tour, the associated brand partnerships, and the negotiating power that comes from being “in demand.” Hollywood relies on momentum, and a damaged reputation not only halts but also reverses that momentum. Agents start to exercise caution. studio hedge. In order to defend themselves against narratives they did not create, the person at the center of the storm frequently ends up using what savings they have for legal fees.

Social media is perceived as having exacerbated rather than improved this. What used to be an industry whisper campaign, similar to the ones that blacklisted individuals in the 1940s and 1950s without making a public statement, now proceeds at algorithmic speed.

Legal complaints in the case of Lively and Baldoni later claimed that Lively was responsible for the film’s disorganized publicity tour and that social media posts with nearly identical language appeared across platforms within hours. Those posts were viewed by millions of people. The majority of them were unaware of the story’s original source. Furthermore, it is nearly impossible to determine the financial harm caused by those clicks—sponsors who quietly withdrew, projects that were never approved—after the fact.

Where both careers go from here is still up in the air. With his wife by his side, Baldoni recently broke his public silence, calling the entire incident an injustice. Hours after the settlement, Lively appeared at the Met Gala in Versace, seemingly unfazed. The decision of who in Hollywood chooses to take the initial risk on them once more will likely determine whether or not either of them regains their financial stability in the business. It always operates that way. Lawsuits do not restore reputations. If they do recover at all, it’s because a powerful person decides the narrative is finished.

And for every Brendan Fraser who eventually wins an Oscar, there are others who just never return. After a tabloid television appearance, Shelley Duvall was written off as unstable despite having worked steadily for years and producing truly excellent films. She was virtually unknown for decades. In actuality, there was no smear campaign. Just a story that solidified around her, and an industry that preferred to move on rather than correct the record.

This is the aspect of Hollywood’s cancel economy that is rarely discussed in public. Justice or even public indignation don’t always lead to financial ruin. Sometimes it’s just the industry’s propensity to view uncertainty as a liability; once a name carries enough uncertainty, the math just doesn’t work in their favor.
