It’s almost theatrical when a genre feud comes back to life years after everyone thought it was over. There has always been an edge to pop punk, both in the music and in the way people act. It’s a world that takes authenticity very seriously, sometimes too seriously. When Machine Gun Kelly started selling out arenas with guitar riffs and black eyeliner, not everyone in that world let him in.
At its core, the fight between MGK and some parts of the Chicago punk and alternative scene is an old one that has been dressed up in new clothes. Underground music really exists in Chicago. It grew slowly, played in small venues, and was created by bands that never made it to the top of the Billboard charts. Some people will get angry when a rapper from Cleveland claims pop punk as his own style and makes a debut album in the style that goes to No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It’s possible that irritation was always going to be there.
Though, MGK didn’t exactly show up in a quiet way. Tickets to My Downfall, which came out in 2020 and was produced with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, made a strong statement. It wasn’t a verse on someone else’s song. It was a complete change of genre—perfect, popular, and impossible to avoid. Fans who had grown up with the scene found it especially painful to see it become popular through someone they saw as an outsider. Because Chicago has a history of trusting music, that hurt more than most places.
The feud was strange because it happened at an odd time. When things really heated up, MGK had already put out his second rock album, Mainstream Sellout, and made it clear that he was “done with rock” and planning to go back to rap. The Chicago scene seems to have picked a fight with someone who was already on their way out the door. That doesn’t make the argument less real, but it does make the whole thing feel strangely far away, like getting a letter about a fight that happened two years ago.
The Corey Taylor dimension made it all the more interesting. As the lead singer of Slipknot and a longtime figurehead of rock credibility, Taylor had made his doubts about MGK known in a loud and public way. Things got heated again when MGK brought up the feud again, saying that it felt different on the inside than it looked on the outside. It’s hard to say if Chicago’s punk scene agrees with Taylor’s ideas more or just shares their spirit, but it’s clear that they do. A lot of people feel that if you have a Travis Barker feature, you shouldn’t try out for rock music.
Still, it’s important to think about the other side’s point of view for a moment. As early as 2010, MGK was booked to play on Warped Tour stages. Before anyone really paid attention, he covered punk and rock songs. He didn’t start his change to pop punk in a boardroom. It’s not clear if the final product felt real, but it seems like it would be too easy to ignore the background. He once said that people who watch over things tend to lose in the long run.
The real truth behind this fight is that pop punk’s comeback has never been easy. This style of music really took off again, thanks to younger listeners who didn’t miss the old days but were hungry for the sound. That gift is hard to understand. It means that the music lives on, but new people who weren’t there the first time change the culture that goes along with it. The Chicago scene is deeply rooted in the original culture, so it finds this new agreement hard to accept.
It’s hard not to notice that these fights end without being solved. There is no winner. There is no official winner. The music keeps going, and people argue in the comments for a while. Eventually, though, something else grabs everyone’s attention. But for a short, strange time, pop punk’s most unlikely leader and one of America’s most protective music cities were actually at odds with each other, which is at least something to pay attention to.
