Once every few years, a picture from the middle of the 1970s shows up on the internet. Steven Tyler, lead singer of Aerosmith, wearing a lot of scarves and angles, standing next to a teenage girl named Julia Holcomb. She was sixteen years old. He was 25 years old. It was the law that he was her guardian. Not her boyfriend. Not her boyfriend. her guardian. It’s important to make the difference, though maybe not in the way Tyler meant.

Some people remember that Steven Tyler adopted his girlfriend, or more accurately, got legal custody of her. This is one of those rock-era events that most people don’t think much about. It usually shows up in lists about crazy excess in the 1970s, in between stories about hotel rooms and private jets. But when the details are laid out clearly, they don’t fit into that frame. This wasn’t too much. This was a whole different thing.

It was liked by Julia Holcomb. She met Tyler at an Aerosmith show in 1973, not long after she turned sixteen. Tyler was already well-known and involved in drugs, which did a lot of damage to his career. Holcomb says that Tyler got her mother to sign over guardianship papers by telling the family that he needed them so Julia could go to school while he was traveling with the band. It was not like that in real life. Tyler had legal control over a minor while she was under guardianship. He used this control to keep her close by having her live with him in Boston in what he saw as a romantic relationship. She was sixteen years old. He was taking cocaine and heroin shots. It’s almost unnecessary to talk about the power difference, but I will anyway: it was complete.

Several sources, including Tyler’s own autobiography, say that what happened next was a three-year relationship marked by drug use, being alone, and dependence. Holcomb has talked about being locked up alone in an apartment with no money or way to get out. A baby was born to her. Tyler has said in public that he pushed her to have an abortion when she was about five months pregnant. He was reportedly worried that the drugs they were both using and the smoke from a house fire could have caused birth defects. Tyler wrote later that he had seen the procedure and was “pretty devastated.” He thought the woman had told him the baby was a boy. Not long after that, the couple broke up.

This story was mostly on the edges for decades. Tyler mentioned it in passing in his autobiography about Aerosmith, “Walk This Way,” where Holcomb wrote under the name “Diana Hall.” It looks like the editor picked the fake name to hide her real name, but you could also say it was to protect Tyler’s reputation. People learned about Holcomb’s whole story through documentaries like “Look Away,” which looked at sexual abuse in the rock industry. Her story wasn’t just a footnote in the movie; it was used as proof of a bigger problem: the music business ignored it when powerful men abused teenage girls.

Holcomb, whose name at the time was Julia Misley, sued Tyler in December 2022, accusing him of sexual assault, sexual battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The suit said Tyler used his fame and money to get to know her, manipulate her, and take advantage of her for three years, starting when she was a child. Tyler’s lawyers replied with a motion to dismiss, saying that the relationship was voluntary and that Tyler was immune because he was her legal guardian at the time. There were public questions and concerns about that defense from lawyers who specialize in sexual assault cases. Tyler was accused of gaslighting by Misley’s own lawyer. By May 2026, a judge had thrown out parts of the lawsuit but let the sexual assault claim go to court.

Time-wise, it’s hard not to notice all of this. The way people talk about accountability in the entertainment business has changed a lot since the 1970s and even more so since the early 2010s. Things that used to be filed under “rock and roll lifestyle” are now put under a name that is more accurate. Courtney Love said in a public comment on the documentary “Look Away” that Tyler had also become the guardian of another young girl, which added another disturbing layer to an already troubling pattern.

For his part, Tyler has never fully dealt with this chapter in a public way that seems right based on the facts. His autobiography wrote about the abortion with pain, but it also talked about the relationship as something that happened in that time. That framing doesn’t look good now. It’s true that the 1970s were a different era, but that doesn’t make the silence surrounding these events any less wrong. In the 1970s, a lot of people knew it was wrong for a 25-year-old man to get legal custody of a 16-year-old girl so he could sleep with her. But they didn’t say it loud enough or to the right people.

The legal case is still going through the courts, the woman who waited almost fifty years to seek justice, and the rock legend whose legacy now has an asterisk that can’t be erased by yelling into a microphone. Steven Tyler and Julia Holcomb’s story is not an old scandal. What and how long we’re willing to put up with is always a question, as is how much it costs the people who have never been able to say no.
