Mike Vrabel Faces Family Drama After His Son’s Recent Arrest

There’s a particular kind of bad timing that follows certain public figures — the kind where one uncomfortable story hasn’t quite finished its news cycle before another one lands. For Mike Vrabel, the New England Patriots head coach, that timing arrived around 8:15 on a weekday morning in Brentwood, Tennessee, when his 26-year-old son Tyler was pulled over behind the wheel of a black Ford F-150, allegedly doing 71 mph in a 45 mph zone.

The stop itself would have been a footnote for almost any other NFL family. A speeding charge, an expired registration sticker from December, a criminal complaint filed by Officer Aaron Yoder — these are the kinds of things that get resolved quietly in traffic court. But this wasn’t any other family, and this wasn’t any other spring.

About five weeks earlier, Page Six had published photographs taken at the Ambiente resort in Sedona, Arizona. The images showed Mike Vrabel and then-Athletic reporter Dianna Russini together in settings that were, at minimum, difficult to explain publicly — poolside, in a hot tub, holding hands on a rooftop deck. Both are married to other people. Additional photos surfaced shortly after, including one showing the two kissing at a New York bar in 2020, and another of Vrabel with a visibly pregnant Russini on a Tennessee lake in 2021. Neither offered a full explanation. Both called their relationship appropriate.

Vrabel addressed it publicly before the NFL Draft, saying his “previous actions don’t meet the standard” he holds himself to. He stepped away from the draft’s final day to seek counseling and acknowledged difficult conversations with his family and the Patriots organization. It was the kind of statement that ends press conference questions but doesn’t really close anything — especially not in the age of social media, where nothing is ever truly over.

Formal charges against Tyler — State of Tennessee vs. Tyler Michael Vrabel, case number 94GSC-2026-TR-4337 — were filed on May 21 in Williamson County Criminal Court. They include reckless driving, speeding, and operating a vehicle with an expired registration. Just under a thousand dollars in assessments remain outstanding, including a blood alcohol test fee. A hearing is set for July 17. No plea has been entered.

Tyler Vrabel isn’t a nobody in football circles. He played 35 games at Boston College, made honorable mention All-ACC as an offensive lineman, signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2022, and appeared in two NFL games. He’s now in his second season coaching the offensive line at Boston College — a quiet, working-class football life, really. He recently got engaged to Mariah Romano, who posted photos that included Mike and Jen Vrabel at what looked like a warm, close family celebration. “The most perfect engagement,” Romano captioned it, “surrounded by the people I love most.”

That image of a family pulling together makes the current moment feel more complicated, not less. There’s a sense that the Vrabels are trying to hold things steady while the public keeps poking at the seams. It’s possible that the reckless driving charge will be resolved without much consequence for Tyler. But the timing ensures it won’t be resolved quietly.

What made the story stranger — and what pushed it into full social media spiral — was the detail about Russini’s own traffic stop. On a podcast earlier this year, she described being pulled over for texting while driving, then FaceTiming an NFL head coach to help persuade the officer to let her go. The coach involved was not believed to be Vrabel. Still, when Tyler’s arrest broke, the internet made the connection almost instantly. “If only he’d called his stepmother,” one post read — shorthand for a joke that required no explanation to anyone who’d been following the story.

Russini resigned from The Athletic in April after its editor reversed an initial defense of her conduct and placed her on leave, citing new information. An internal investigation into her Vrabel coverage was still reportedly unresolved as of late June.

Mike Vrabel has been the Patriots head coach since January 2025, stepping in after six seasons in Tennessee. He hasn’t faced a formal NFL investigation. But the season hasn’t started yet, and it’s hard not to notice how much heavier the job looks right now than it probably did in January.
