Most careers have a turning point. Not gradually, but all at once. You may be in the room one day and not the next. For Teyana Taylor, that moment came with something more subdued and, in some ways, more agonizing than a spectacular dismissal or public fall from grace: being phased out.
Taylor was the person behind the person for many years. The person in the background is the teenage choreographer who was brought in to work with Beyoncé. The voice on a song promoted by someone else. The industry was aware of her genuine talent, but talent and recognition have never progressed in the same direction on the same timeline, particularly for Black women in entertainment.
When Paul Thomas Anderson cast her in One Battle After Another, everything fell into place that nobody had quite expected, least of all the people who had ignored her.
Her portrayal of Perfidia Beverly Hills, which was physically explosive, darkly humorous, and subtly layered, won her a Golden Globe and catapulted her to the top of the Oscar conversation for Best Supporting Actress. It’s nearly impossible to believe she spent more than 20 years in environments that weren’t quite designed for her when you see her opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn.
There is a compelling argument that Taylor’s years of being disregarded helped him develop something that early, simple success could not have produced. She is currently 35 years old, which is late for a breakthrough in Hollywood but the ideal age to know oneself and what one wants from a role in real life. Perfidia doesn’t feel like an actor trying to fit in. It’s as though someone is completely inhabiting a person, wielding power rather than exercising it.
She has been open about how complicated that character is. Taylor did not sidestep criticism when it came to sexualization. With the directness that results from giving something careful thought, she pushed back. “Is that not what Black women go through?” she said. It wasn’t a defensive response. It was anchored.
She is likely so captivating on screen because of this trait—the willingness to sit inside difficulty rather than smooth it over. That is not something you can create in a career that has gone perfectly.
Here, there is a more general pattern that is worth observing. Some of Hollywood’s most enduringly captivating actors didn’t come through the obvious door. Once the industry had determined which category to place them in, they entered through the side entrance. Comfort seldom necessitates the kind of recalibration that is required when one is dismissed, or dumped in the professional sense. You give up on the definition of success that other people have given you.
However, it’s important to avoid making this a neat tale of redemption. Complicated careers are often repackaged into tidy narratives during Oscar season. Taylor’s ascent does not prove that the system is effective if you persevere long enough. If anything, it begs the question of how many people of similar skill never received the appropriate call.
Nevertheless, Taylor’s use of this opportunity feels well-deserved. She wasn’t merely there to pick up a gold statue after a protracted wait. Even if it had come from someone with three prior nominations and a studio campaign behind it, she gave a performance that would have made headlines.
The ceremony has not yet taken place. Awards contests change, and this season has already seen a number of front-runners falter. However, something has already changed for Taylor, regardless of how this ends. The person behind the person is no longer her. People are observing her. And it began as soon as the industry stopped focusing.
