No big announcement was made. No tearful interview, no statement from a publicist, no cryptic Instagram post. Two of the most talked-about co-stars of the past few years, Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater, seem to have just… broken up. Silently. months before anyone outside of their inner circle was even aware of it.
People and TMZ revealed that the couple had been split up for several months at the beginning of June 2026. According to a source, the breakup was “amicable,” and they gave it “lots of time and careful consideration” before parting ways. According to reports, they are still friends. still encouraging one another. However, they are no longer romantic partners.
For a relationship that started under genuinely complex circumstances and about which many people had strong feelings from the beginning, it’s an oddly mature conclusion.
On the UK set of the Wicked movie adaptation, Grande and Slater first crossed paths in late 2022. At the time, she was still wed to Dalton Gomez, a real estate developer. He was married to Lilly Jay, his high school sweetheart, and they had a small child together earlier that year. Both marriages were openly failing by the middle of 2023. The two were romantically involved by July 2023, and the internet had already voiced its opinions loudly and without much thought.
By the standards of celebrities, the subsequent relationship was rather low-key. Together, they went to red carpets. They appeared at award ceremonies. Slater was one of the first to publicly congratulate Grande after she was nominated for an Oscar for her performance as Glinda. He shared infrequent, heartfelt pictures of her on his Instagram Stories during the holidays in December 2025. He wrote, “very merry holidays,” over a photo of her laughing at what appeared to be a private event. It’s not at all performative. Nevertheless, there are some worthwhile questions raised by the news’s timing. Days before the breakup story was released, Grande began her eagerly anticipated Eternal Sunshine Tour, her first tour since 2019. Next month, she will release a new album called Petal, which will be preceded by a single titled “Hate That I Made You Love Me.” Both the album and the single were not inspired by or about Ethan Slater, according to people with firsthand knowledge of the matter. Perhaps. Even though the timing is completely coincidental, it’s still difficult to ignore the unique poetry of it.
One theory seems more grounded than the others. Some have referred to it as the “Wicked bubble,” which was an intense, enclosed, and creatively charged world unto itself. During months of filming in England, away from their everyday lives, two actors find each other and create something genuine under a very particular kind of pressure. The return to regular schedules, distinct projects, and the basic friction of two busy careers going in different directions don’t always sustain that kind of connection. As recently as November 2025, a source told People that they were “making it work” in spite of the demands placed on them both. In hindsight, that phrase does a lot of silent heavy lifting.
Slater was performing off-Broadway with Marcel on the Train after Wicked. In addition to filming a comedy, Grande was preparing for a massive world tour that she has already stated will likely be her last for a very long time. The shared project, the shared press circuit, and the shared world of Oz that characterized their early relationship had vanished. It’s possible that what they had created within it was insufficient to get them through what followed.
Some will interpret this conclusion as a cosmic repercussion of how the relationship started, and some have already done so. That is a human instinct, and it has some merit. However, it’s also possible that two individuals simply diverged after a significant shared chapter came to an end. One explanation does not negate the other.
What’s left is a rather unique chapter in recent celebrity history: a relationship that started on a movie set, withstood intense public scrutiny, lasted almost three years, and ended without much fanfare or apparent animosity. That’s the whole story sometimes.
