How Do You Know, which came out in 2010, is Jack Nicholson’s final motion picture credit. Nicholson’s performance in it was not among his greatest, and the movie wasn’t very good. Since then, he hasn’t been seen on screen. He currently resides in Los Angeles, is in his late seventies, and has not publicly said whether or not he views himself as retired. He just stopped. The industry has largely adapted to his departure without ever quite getting a formal explanation, despite the fact that it spent decades being unable to envisage itself without him.

That is the reality of Hollywood retirement, for the most part. There isn’t a ceremony. There will be no last press conference. Contracts cease to be signed, productions cease to be publicized, and eventually a reporter discovers that a specific name has not been associated with anything for four years and writes a piece on it. Seldom are the causes unique, if they can be determined at all.

The epitome of a purposeful departure is Daniel Day-Lewis. After finishing Phantom Thread, his third film with Paul Thomas Anderson and, by most accounts, one of his best roles, in 2017, he announced through his publicist that he would no longer be performing. No further explanation. There is no deadline for reevaluation. His dedication to method preparation had always been exceptionally severe; in between movies, he would go through research and inhabitation processes that most actors wouldn’t try for a single role. Perhaps he had simply reached the limit of what the work could require of him after Phantom Thread. He hasn’t said much in public. It seems that his decision is final.

Between around 2014 and 2024, Cameron Diaz’s absence from screens took a distinct form. She simply disappeared, got married, had a child, and stopped making movies for ten years without making any specific announcements. She talked about the past ten years in interviews after returning for Back in Action, saying that she needed to discover a different pace and a different kind of life than what Hollywood’s production schedule required. In no particular documented sense was her departure motivated by a crisis. It was more like a slow realization that she did not want to live the life that her work demanded.

More direct about his motivations was Gene Hackman, who retired in 2004 following a career that includes two Academy Awards and some of the most iconic roles in American cinema from the 1970s through the 1990s. He said that he had grown weary of the film industry and that the process of making movies no longer seemed meaningful. He began writing crime books, which he co-wrote with his son. He seems to have found the change fulfilling. One of the cleanest ones was Hackman’s departure, which was a choice he made and didn’t seem to regret.

The relationship between career withdrawal and personal crises is typically more nuanced and rarely as clear-cut as “event caused retirement.” After her manager and husband, Marty Melcher, passed away in the late 1960s, Doris Day withdrew from major motion picture production, revealing that he had seriously mishandled her finances. Together with the practical disturbance came the anguish. She didn’t declare her retirement; instead, she grew more and more involved in animal welfare campaigning, which eventually took up all of her time.

Despite their diversity, all instances have one thing in common: they lack a clear narrative. The real pattern of how major careers end is less evident, despite Hollywood’s tendency to generate storylines with obvious causes and effects. Health builds up. Priorities are altered by grief. It becomes more difficult to maintain the energy for the production machine. When a relationship ends, the life it was a part of, including one’s career, changes. Retirement is not always directly caused by any of these factors. However, they alter how much the labor is worth and how much it will cost to continue, and occasionally the math just stops adding up.
