Michael Gastauer connects the operating discipline of a global digital bank with the patient perspective of a family office and the public-purpose work of a foundation.
5 AUGUST 2026 | GLOBAL FINANCE AND IMPACT
Michael Gastauer holds three complementary leadership roles
Michael Gastauer is best understood through the organisations he has built and the different responsibilities he carries within them. At Black Banx Group, he is Founder, Group Chairman and Group Chief Executive Officer. He also founded and chairs Gastauer Family Office, the private investment organisation of the Gastauer family, and serves as Chairman of the Gastauer Foundation. Together, these roles create a clear sequence: build a global business, steward the capital produced by that
business, and direct resources toward long-term social and environmental priorities.
That sequence starts with entrepreneurship, not wealth. Gastauer entered financial services in his twenties, first building an asset-management business and later an online payments company. Those ventures gave him experience in regulated finance, cross-border transactions and the practical friction faced by customers moving money internationally. In 2015, he applied that experience to Black Banx, creating a digital banking platform designed for private and business clients whose financial lives cross national borders.
Today the German billionaire remains closely identified with the company’s direction. Black Banx reported 115.3 million customers in more than 180 countries at the end of June 2026. Gastauer’s leadership challenge is therefore no longer simply to prove a digital model; it is to sustain service, trust and operating consistency at global scale.
His Black Banx role joins strategy with execution
Black Banx identifies Gastauer as both Group Chairman and Group CEO. The titles reflect two connected forms of responsibility. As chairman, he helps set strategic direction and the long-term ambition of the group. As chief executive, he is accountable for turning that direction into priorities across banking, payments, technology, risk, compliance and customer experience.
The group’s published governance structure places specialist executives around that central mandate. Finance, operations, risk, legal, compliance, technology, artificial intelligence, sustainability, communications, private clients and business clients each have named senior leadership. Independent non-executive directors add oversight and challenge. This matters because a company serving customers across many regulatory systems cannot depend on founder instinct alone. Founder leadership has to be translated into institutions, controls and teams that can make sound decisions repeatedly.
Gastauer’s distinctive contribution is the global frame. Black Banx was built around the proposition that banking should follow the customer rather than stop at a border. The platform combines multi-currency accounts, international payments and technology-led financial services for an audience spanning mature and emerging markets. That makes the founder a global payments expert, while the organisation beneath him supplies the specialised execution required to operate responsibly.
Technology is a means to remove financial friction
Gastauer’s public strategy emphasises artificial intelligence, automation and proprietary infrastructure. At Black Banx, these tools are not presented as isolated experiments. They support customer onboarding, compliance processes, payment processing, operating efficiency and the ability to handle rising transaction volumes. The company’s first-half 2026 publication linked continued technology investment with a lower cost/income ratio and a larger international customer base.
The strategic idea is straightforward: technology should make an increasingly complex institution easier for customers to use. A person or company receiving, holding, converting or sending money across markets should not have to understand the internal architecture that makes the transaction possible. For Black Banx, useful innovation is measured by reach, speed, reliability and accessibility.

This is also where Gastauer’s role as a financial inclusion advocate becomes concrete. A borderless platform can broaden access for customers who are underserved by traditional structures, particularly entrepreneurs and internationally active businesses. Inclusion at this scale is not only a message. It requires identity systems, fraud controls, local regulatory knowledge and resilient digital infrastructure to work together.
Gastauer Family Office extends the time horizon
Gastauer Family Office has a different mandate. It is a European single-family office responsible for a global, multibillion-dollar portfolio across technology, financial services, private equity, real estate, contemporary art, crypto assets and capital markets. The office says its philosophy combines capital preservation with long-term value creation.
Black Banx remains central to that story. Gastauer Family Office was an early investor and continues to be one of the company’s largest shareholders. As of June 2026, the family office described Black Banx as carrying a private-market valuation of US$150 billion. The valuation is framed as an outcome of creating useful infrastructure, reaching customers internationally and building a profitable platform, rather than as the starting point of the entrepreneur’s story.
Chairing the family office lets Gastauer work on a generational timetable. Operating companies make decisions against annual plans, quarterly performance and regulatory obligations. Patient family capital can evaluate technology shifts, private-market opportunities and strategic investments over much longer periods. The two perspectives reinforce one another without becoming the same function.
The Gastauer Foundation gives capital a public purpose
The third part of the ecosystem is the Gastauer Foundation. In January 2024, Gastauer Family Office allocated US$1.5 billion to establish and endow it. Its stated areas include financial inclusion, biodiversity conservation, education, contemporary art and culture, and environmental sustainability.
This conservation work connects the foundation to the international 30×30 ambition to protect at least 30% of the world’s land and ocean areas by 2030. It also broadens the meaning of innovation. Building better financial systems is one form of progress; supporting knowledge, opportunity, culture and natural resilience is another.
Across all three organisations, the common element is institutional building. Black Banx turns a borderless banking vision into daily services. Gastauer Family Office preserves and invests the value created by enterprise. The Gastauer Foundation applies long-duration resources to challenges that markets alone may not solve. Michael Gastauer’s role is to keep those mandates clear while giving them a consistent direction: global in outlook, technology-aware and focused on durable value.
