If you’re a 19-year-old boy going to prom with hot pink streaks in your shoulder-length black hair, a dark suit jacket, and a gothic rose boutonniere on your chest, there’s something reassuring about it. So did Liam McDermott, the oldest son of Dean McDermott and Tori Spelling. And his dad couldn’t help but share the moment with everyone. The pictures Dean put on Instagram on June 16 weren’t just quick shots from the prom. They seemed like a small statement. This kid knows what he’s doing.
At prom, Liam, who is now 19, looked like he had taken clothes from a Tim Burton movie and made them work. The bright pink pieces in his black hair that framed his face and the magenta dress shirt under his suit jacket gave the whole outfit a deliberate, thought-out edge. Silvana, his prom date, had a hot pink accent on top of her short black hair, wore a dark strapless dress with iridescent beads, red opera gloves, and a black choker with spikes. She looked great. They didn’t look like a typical prom couple. Instead, they looked like they were about to open for a big band at a small downtown venue. The outfits looked put together without being over the top, which is harder to do than most people think.
This was part of what Dean McDermott, 59, called “a busy week.” And “busy” doesn’t quite say it. During that time, Stella’s family also celebrated her 18th birthday, high school graduation, and prom. Stella went in a totally different direction. She wore long platinum blonde hair, a strapless pink dress with lots of pretty beads, and posed outside with her dad.
The difference between the two siblings was so great that it was almost funny. One is going all out punk, and the other is going all out glam. The post’s caption was written with the tired pride that only a parent of five kids can muster: “1 birthday, 2 proms, 1 graduation, and 1 learning lesson.” He learned a lesson from Stella’s heart-shaped birthday cake’s black frosting, which stained his tongue for days.

The story behind the pictures made them feel warmer than most celebrity kid prom photos. A few months before, Spelling and four of the kids were taken to the hospital after a car accident in Temecula. In what Spelling called “crazy, crazy fast” speed, someone hit the side of their car. There were also kids’ friends in the car. Spelling was clearly scared and thankful in her Instagram post about the crash. She said that guardian angels were with them that day. The family got better, but that kind of thing stays in the background of every celebration afterward.
Liam’s hair was already blue by Mother’s Day in May, so the pink at prom must have been an improvement, or at least a step forward. It’s interesting to see how a teen expresses themselves through their hair color alone. He’s trying new things and figuring out his style in real time, as shown by the pictures. It’s interesting that both of his parents don’t seem to mind that he does it.
After 18 years of marriage, Dean and Tori finally got a divorce in November 2025. They have five children together: Liam, Stella, Hattie (14), Finn (13), and Beau (9). As with most things involving Tori Spelling, the split was all over the tabloids for months. But the pictures from the prom told a different story. When Dean posted about his two oldest children with pride and called himself a “proud papa,” it didn’t feel fake. There was nothing exciting about the caption. There were no subtle jabs at his ex. Just a dad showing off the big things his kids have done.
It’s impossible not to notice that Liam’s punk look got more attention than most A-list prom moments this year. Maybe it’s because people think Hollywood kids will always look good—in designer suits, with normal hairstyles and well-groomed looks. Liam didn’t do any of those things. His date leaned right in with him when he said something personal and a little strange. For a family that’s been through a lot in the news, like money problems, a messy divorce, and a scary accident, seeing a kid with pink hair smile at prom seems like a small but good thing. The kind of moment that doesn’t need to be anything else.
