Everyone knows what kind of character that is in animated TV shows, but nobody really loves them. They are the person standing slightly off-center in the group picture. They are skilled, caring, and often overlooked. You should really think about that for a moment. Wanda Venus Fairywinkle-Cosma from The Fairly OddParents is exactly that thing. Because she kept a universe together through decades of episodes, reboots, live-action movies, and comic books. Without her, the universe would have fallen apart under the weight of its own chaos.

Beginning with the first movie in the series, Wanda has been Timmy Turner’s fairy godparent. She has granted wishes, saved Cosmo from disaster, and been called a nag for just being right. The most interesting thing about her might be that last part. The show never tried to hide the fact that she was the smartest person there. Anyway, it let other characters ignore her, which, for some reason, felt like real life.

Susanne Blakeslee has been her voice actress since the beginning, and there’s something nice about how consistently she does her job. Blakeslee gave Wanda a grounded warmth that kept her from just yelling at her. Even when the show used Wanda as the “voice of reason” trope, there was something real going on underneath it all: real love for Timmy, real frustration with Cosmo, and real motherly instinct when Poof came along.

Wanda and Cosmo’s relationship is a big part of what makes the show emotional. Cosmo was a geeky waiter at a diner when they met, and Wanda was the cool girl who saw something in him anyway. The pen cap he used was chewed. Yes, she said. Their marriage has been going on for a very long time, which is both a strange and beautiful thought. This was mostly done on the show to make people laugh, but it also gave Wanda a life outside of being a godparent. Blonda, her twin sister, liked being pretty more than working hard. She used to date Juandissimo, who would show up in episodes at the most dramatic times. She had to deal with her mother-in-law, Mama Cosma, who tried to get rid of her more than once.

Then Poof showed up. Cosmo got pregnant, which was a strange turn of events for the show, and Timmy wished for Cosmo and Wanda to have a child. This gave Wanda a new perspective. Her real baby son and the ten-year-old boy she had been watching out for for years turned to her as a mother figure at the same time. It’s a lot to carry, and sometimes the show was surprisingly honest about how heavy it was.

Wanda wasn’t always written as being very smart, which is easy to miss if you just watch for fun. She sometimes decides things on the spot, doesn’t read Da Rules, or puts herself and everyone else in situations that are hard to get out of. An earlier version of this article said that she had a bad temper and that her psychotic side would sometimes show. She was more interesting than the stereotypical “sensible wife” would have you believe.

Wanda came back to being a godparent in the 2024 reboot, A New Wish, after being away for 10,000 years. This sentence only makes sense in this fictional world. People say she’s a little out of practice now that she’s Hazel Wells’ godparent. There’s something really moving about that. Even a fairy who has been doing the same thing for thousands of years can slip and fall. Your pink, curly hair and yellow shirt are still there, but the outfit has changed a little. Now it has a button-up shirt with a frilly collar. It’s a small thing, but it shows that the show knew Wanda well enough to change her look without taking away what made her unique.

You can’t help but think that Wanda deserved more praise than she usually got, from the other characters and from people who watched the show. In all the right ways, she was smart, kind, and stubborn. She loved deeply, worried all the time, and showed up even when no one asked her to. For someone who once took a chewed pen cap as an engagement ring, that’s not a bad legacy.
