There isn’t a name for a certain kind of loneliness. It’s not the loneliness of being single or having lost someone. There’s nothing more lonely than sitting at dinner with your husband while your baby sleeps in the next room and feeling like you’re not wanted there.

In a post that quietly spread across places on the internet where people go when they have nowhere else to turn, one woman wrote about this situation. She had just learned something hard: her husband had been angry at her during the months after their son was born. Really. He didn’t like her. He didn’t like how weak she looked or how everyone was hovering around her. He also didn’t like having to keep himself together while she clearly fell apart. When asked, he said that “hate” might have been too strong of a word. Not by much, though.

The confession is not what makes the story interesting. It was because of how normal the conditions were.

Two people. One child. Isolation beyond compare. It was just a small house that was cut off from the rest of the world. There were no children or friends nearby. Feelings don’t just grow in that kind of setting; they ferment. And when they do come to the surface, they usually do it badly. For some reason, the husband turned his anger inward and then outward, toward the person who was probably having the most trouble.

There is no monster in this story. That could be easier, in fact. Monsters are easy to make. She was dealing with a more complicated person—he said he wasn’t himself. Someone who might have had a traumatic response, depression, or just broke under pressure he wasn’t ready for. Who, instead of asking for help, turned cold and quiet.

It’s possible that a lot of couples have thought about something like this but never said it out loud. The postpartum period is always talked about from the mother’s point of view, which is natural. The partner’s feelings during those months, on the other hand, cast a strange shadow. Not excused, but also not looked into. Some people think that society just expects new dads to deal with everything and keep going. That doesn’t always happen.

She said that the anger wasn’t even what stayed with her. It was how her own response shocked her. Maybe she should have been angry, but she wasn’t. She was already sad, but she felt even worse when she realized she wasn’t shocked. Her self-esteem had been slowly falling for months, and she wasn’t even aware of it. That wear and tear is its own story. A slow one. the kind that doesn’t make itself known.

For a week, she went to see her mother. She got away from something that was making her feel suffocated. He told her he missed her. He might have meant it.

There is no clear answer to the more difficult question of whether things can be rebuilt. Her goal was for it to work. She also knew that things couldn’t be the same for her during this pregnancy. She couldn’t fix those two things that were sitting next to each other in her mind. Therapy came up and wasn’t done. Anyone who has tried to help a partner who doesn’t want help knows this pattern: the gentle suggestion, the initial agreement, and the quiet retreat.

Most people can’t get past what she said near the end of her post. In her writing, she said her child would always come first. That she would leave right away if something hurt him. That sentence doesn’t have any dramatic edge to it. It sounds like she came to it slowly and calmly, the way you do when you come to something that is just true.

Marriage takes a lot of work. Some people take in more than they should. You should think about more than just whether this one survives. You should also think about whether survival, without honesty and real repair, is really the goal that you should be chasing.
