Eddie Vedder’s Daughter Olivia Is Quietly Becoming the Artist He Always Hoped She’d Be

The fact that Eddie Vedder, a man who once yelled into a microphone about identity, grief, and anger, has spent the last 20 years performing the very commonplace, unglamorous, and profoundly human task of being a father has an almost subdued poetic quality. Additionally, it appears from the outside that he has taken it quite seriously.

On June 11, 2004, Vedder and his activist and former model wife Jill welcomed their first daughter, Olivia James Vedder. Harper Moon Vedder, their second, was born on September 23, 2008. The frontman of one of the biggest rock bands of the 1990s likely made a conscious effort to keep both girls out of the spotlight during their early years.

From the beginning, Eddie was open about being a father, and notably, his feelings weren’t sentimental or gentle as one might anticipate. “It wasn’t the glowy lovey-dovey,” he once remarked. “It fueled my anger.” He clarified that by seeing the world through his daughter’s eyes, they were able to relate to global issues in a way that they had not previously. It’s uncommon for a famous parent to be so forthright, and it speaks volumes about how seriously he took the part.

He expressed his greatest hope that Olivia would become a powerful activist when she was only three years old. It’s a strange wish for a young child. However, it makes sense—comfort or fame were never the foundation of the Vedder household. Purpose and music appear to have been the constants.

In her own way, 22-year-old Olivia has fulfilled those initial expectations. Co-written with Eddie and Glen Hansard of The Frames, her song “My Father’s Daughter” was featured in Sean Penn’s 2021 film Flag Day. That same year, she shared a stage with Hansard and her father while performing it live at the Ohana Festival. It’s difficult to ignore something in that picture: a father who constructed a festival, invited his daughter to perform there, and stood a few feet away to give her the opportunity.

She has also made appearances outside of music. Olivia and her mother participated in a Planned Parenthood rally in 2022, and Olivia later gave a speech to a Seattle TV station urging Generation Z to register to vote. “My parents raised me to always pay attention to what’s going on in the world,” she said. It doesn’t sound practiced. It sounds like something that was absorbed over many years at a dinner table where those discussions were commonplace.

At seventeen, Harper, the younger daughter, has also begun to establish herself. She joined her father onstage at the 2024 Ohana Festival for a mash-up of Taylor Swift’s “The Best Day” and Pearl Jam’s “Last Kiss.” It had been a long time since they had a strong young woman on stage with them, Eddie said as he introduced her. It’s succinct, straightforward, and the kind of thing a parent says when they truly mean it.

It’s not the celebrity aspect that makes the Vedder family intriguing; rather, it’s what appears to be a sincere effort to raise children who are considerate rather than merely safe. Eddie has talked candidly about his own challenging upbringing, growing up with a man who wasn’t his biological father, and the work required to intentionally parent differently. “I’m trying to break any chain of negative parenting that I might have survived,” he told People. That’s not the kind of statement found in a press release. When someone has truly sat with the weight of it, they say something like that.

Both daughters appear to be entering adulthood with some clarity about who they are, regardless of whether Olivia’s music career continues to flourish or Harper finds her own path away from the stage. For children raised close to celebrity, that isn’t always the case. The Vedders may have been correct on a few key points.
