Loving fictional characters as much as Heartstopper fans adore Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring seems almost unjust. You can’t watch these characters at a comfortable distance. You can sense their uncomfortable pauses, their deliberate actions, and how they came to love one another in little, repeated moments rather than big ones. Thus, when Heartstopper A large section of the internet collectively stopped breathing when Forever, the Netflix finale film that debuted on July 17, 2026, confirmed that yes, Nick and Charlie do break up.

In a nutshell, they split up and then reconciled. However, the brief response hardly addresses it.

The breakup takes place in a kitchen at a house party shortly before the one-hour mark of the movie, amid a tense, fluorescent-lit atmosphere that feels unbearably real. Charlie discovers Nick by himself, obviously in a different state of mind. What happens next is a conversation between two people who love each other so much that they have each persuaded themselves that the other deserves better.

It may seem reasonable on the surface, but it is actually quietly devastating underneath. Charlie is concerned that he is preventing Nick from attending college and from being young, carefree, and unrestricted. “I’m only happy when I’m with you,” Nick says, sounding like a confession he didn’t mean to make. “I don’t think that’s how it should be,” Charlie responds. Nick is certain that his anxiety, which has been subtly growing throughout the entire movie, is what is holding Charlie back.

The exchange is devastating. If you sit with it, it’s also a very honest one.

The graphic novel series and a short story she wrote years ago called Nick and Charlie, in which the couple does briefly part ways, are both sources of inspiration for the movie, according to creator Alice Oseman. Fans always felt a certain weight associated with that novella: the realization that even the most well-maintained relationship could break under sufficient strain. Without portraying either character as the antagonist, the movie capitalizes on this tension. There is no abrupt personality change, no cruelty, and no cheating. Just two nervous teenagers who are too devoted to each other to ask for what they need.

Here, Nick’s mental health receives much-needed attention. Charlie’s journey through an eating disorder and recovery was the main focus of the series for three seasons. The lens is flipped forever.

Nick is having difficulties, including anxiety that stems in part from his father’s absence and a fear of imperfection that he seems to have been secretly harboring while serving as Charlie’s strongest ally. During a rugby match, he gets into a fight. He gets a black eye and ends up in the emergency room. He loses his temper with those who are important to him. The point is that it’s not what Nick fans are accustomed to seeing.

Both boys fall apart in different ways following the breakup. Charlie’s eating disorder gets worse. After a painful misinterpretation during Pride, he almost relapses into self-harm. Outside of rugby and relationships, Nick, on the other hand, finds unexpected serenity working at an animal rescue. It’s important to note that both boys’ parallel recoveries—rebuilding themselves independently—feel earned rather than hurried.

A disposable camera is used for the reconciliation. Charlie develops the pictures. “You take a lot of photos of me,” he writes as he drops them off at Nick’s house. Are you attracted to me or something? Come see me at the beach at 5:00 p.m.

The beach is important. They went on their first date there. Nick arrives. They find their way back while talking, really talking.

It’s possible that some fans will always believe the breakup was pointless, a well-known narrative device inserted into a tale that took pride in its uniqueness. That criticism isn’t wholly incorrect. However, it can be argued that Heartstopper Forever used the breakup to highlight these characters’ true nature when they aren’t supporting one another rather than as drama for its own sake. As it happens, they remain upright. All they had to know about themselves was that.

A glimpse of the future is given in the epilogue, with Nick in Leeds and Charlie visiting, both of them managing to make it work. No grandiose proclamations. As they seem to always do, it’s just two people picking each other.
