    A different type of fortune seeker used to be drawn to the road that leads to a sizable data center campus outside of Reno, Nevada. Prospectors came here with pickaxes and pans in the 1800s, hoping to find gold buried in dusty hills. Thousands of fiber-optic cables, liquid-cooling equipment, and racks of processors are among the strange things that the trucks are bringing to the site these days.

    Today’s miners are engineers. Furthermore, they are not excavating for subterranean metal. It’s processing power.

    There is a growing consensus in the technology sector that the most valuable layer of the entire AI economy is Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure. Although software tools and chatbots make headlines, many investors believe that the real competition is taking place beneath the surface, in warehouses full of humming machines. It’s easy to understand why.

    Tens of thousands of specialized processors operating nonstop for weeks may be needed to train a single large AI model. Companies like NVIDIA, whose graphics processors have subtly become the engines of the AI boom, provide the chips most frequently used for this task. These processors are arranged in rows inside metal racks that are dimly illuminated by green and blue lights in data centers all over the world.

    Cool air is forced through massive ventilation systems. Ceilings are covered in thick cables. As they move slowly between server rows, technicians keep an ear out for unusual fan noise. The place has a subtle scent of cold air conditioning and hot electronics. It’s difficult to ignore how tangible the digital economy has grown.

    Over the coming years, it is anticipated that tech behemoths like Microsoft and Amazon will invest hundreds of billions of dollars in developing AI infrastructure. Investors appear to be persuaded that the next generation of technological platforms will be shaped by whoever controls artificial intelligence’s computational core. The industry seems to have entered a sort of strategic arms race.

    The demand for compute nearly immediately increased when OpenAI started training larger language models. In response, rivals constructed even bigger GPU clusters—sometimes in the tens of thousands. Suddenly, land for new data centers, cooling water, and electricity were just as important as software expertise.

    It’s hard not to notice parallels to past technological revolutions as this develops. The late 1990s internet boom necessitated the installation of miles of fiber-optic cables beneath cities and seas. The 2000s saw a surge in cloud computing that filled entire industrial parks with servers. However, compared to both of those previous expansions, the scale of the AI infrastructure build-out seems to be larger—and faster.

    According to some analysts, this decade may see trillions of dollars spent globally on AI-related infrastructure. The bottlenecks are surprisingly antiquated.

    For instance, electricity. The power consumption of a contemporary AI data center is comparable to that of a small city. New projects are already waiting years to be connected to electrical grids in parts of the US and Europe. To keep the machines running, some businesses are looking into nuclear power partnerships or constructing their own energy plants. The geography of technology has started to change as a result of that reality.

    Suddenly, areas like Nevada, Texas, and parts of the Middle East that have cheap land and plenty of electricity are becoming popular sites for AI infrastructure. It’s possible that the next generation of technology hubs will appear in peaceful desert regions where power lines extend toward enormous data facilities rather than in crowded urban areas. Investors are observing.

    Due to demand from AI startups that require computing resources but cannot afford to build their own infrastructure, specialized cloud providers are almost immediately reaching enormous valuations. Something familiar is starting to emerge in the economics: a race for limited resources.

    The most dependable earners during the 1849 California gold rush weren’t always miners. It was frequently the vendors offering supplies, tents, and tools. It’s possible that the same dynamic is happening once more.

    Demand is rising for companies producing the “picks and shovels” of artificial intelligence, such as chips, servers, networking hardware, and cooling systems. In private, some executives acknowledge that they are barely able to produce equipment quickly enough to fulfill orders. Still, there are unspoken concerns about the frenzy.

    Infrastructure booms that exceeded demand are common in the history of technology. Telecom companies installed far more fiber-optic cable in the early 2000s than the internet actually required. Traffic didn’t catch up for years. Something like this might occur once more.

    However, the scope of the goal is evident when one walks through a recently constructed AI data center and hears the low mechanical hum of thousands of GPUs operating in parallel. The machines are training algorithms that can analyze vast amounts of data, create images, write essays, and diagnose illnesses.

    The world doesn’t seem to be able to produce enough of them, at least not right now.
